The two videos that I am comparing are 'Going To Hell' by The Pretty Reckless, which is part of the Rock genre, and 'Here's To Never Growing Up' by Avril Lavigne, which is part of the Pop genre.
The Pretty Reckless's (TPR) video is about doing sinful acts and is confessing them to those who will listen in an attempt to be saved, but then she realises she has done too much and accepts that she is going to hell and doesn't care anymore. Avril Lavigne's video is about refusing to grow up and she revisits a time in her memory when she was at prom and doing all the things in the prime of her youth and saying that she won't change now. These two music videos despite being from completely different genres do in fact have some technical similarities. The first similarity I'd like to address is the camera angles.
Frequently these two videos show a close up of the vocalist singing into the camera and displaying their emotions clearly.
The genre still shines through though, as the Pop music video is brighter and has warmer colours, whereas the Rock music video is darker and has cooler colours.
Throughout each videos we see cutaways to the band and their instruments being played. This is an example of the guitarists playing their instruments to the music. This is somewhat non-standard for a Pop music video to have a guitar in the song but does conform to the Pop imagery as the guitar is bright and sparkling.
The contrast of a bright light in a dark place is also present in both videos. This shows a light flare across the camera lens whilst the rest of the scene is dark. This is non-standard for a Rock video to bring light into a grungy scene as it washes out the shot and makes the video seem more like a Pop video as the flare looks like house light in a large and popular arena, which Rock bands don't normally play in.
During the climax of each music video the extras start to smash up and break the props in the environment around them to signify rebellion. This is non-standard of a Pop music video, as Pop music by definition conforms to the popular demands of society. So a Pop music video showing rebellion goes against this ideal drastically. If you look closely in each music video you will see that each front-woman takes on a persona in each video. For TPR the vocalist goes through the video succumbing to the sin around her, she then reveals that she secretly was sin all along and that she cannot change that. In Avril's music video she goes around pretending that she is young again but always standing apart from the other young people, she then wears her hair and her clothes the way that she did when she was 16 and just started her music career and at this point she joins in with the other kids.
